Important Information!

Pasadena Heritage does not endorse or guarantee any business, contractor, consultant, product, or service included in the Professional Referral Directory.

Businesses included in the directory pay an annual fee for their listing. The directory is not comprehensive, and the absence of a business from the directory does not indicate a lack of qualifications.

As with any business transaction, property owners should conduct their own due diligence before hiring a professional. We encourage property owners to:

  • Ask for and verify references from recent projects.

  • Confirm that contractors and other professionals have the appropriate licenses, permits, and insurance coverage.

  • Obtain written proposals and contracts before beginning work.

  • Verify that the proposed work complies with applicable City of Pasadena requirements and other relevant regulations.

Working with Historic Properties

Historic buildings often contain irreplaceable materials, craftsmanship, and architectural details. Before undertaking alterations, additions, demolition, or major repairs, property owners should determine whether the property is individually designated, located within a historic district, or otherwise subject to preservation requirements. If you know your building is historic, or if you want to know its status, we recommend consulting the City of Pasadena’s Design & Historic Preservation section of the Planning Department prior to commencing work. Call (626) 744-4009 to speak with a City Planner. Be sure to enquire about required permits and who will be responsible for pulling them.

Be sure to obtain all required permits and approvals from the appropriate City of Pasadena departments and agencies before beginning work.

When evaluating a project, property owners are encouraged to consider repair and restoration before replacement. Historic windows, doors, woodwork, masonry, plaster, finishes, and other architectural features can often be repaired and retained rather than removed and replaced. Preserving original materials can protect a building's character, craftsmanship, and long-term value.

Professionals working with historic properties should approach each project with an understanding of the building's history, materials, construction methods, and architectural character.
