Altadena Revealed: "Owen Brown’s Body" Screening and Q&A

Owen Brown’s Body: A Film Screening and Conversation

Join us for a special screening of Owen Brown’s Body, a new educational film by filmmaker Pablo D. Miralles. Commissioned by the Owen Brown Gravesite Committee, this film was created to engage students, support teacher professional development, and share the remarkable local story of Owen Brown with the broader public.

Owen Brown—abolitionist and son of John Brown—escaped the South via the Underground Railroad and ultimately settled in Altadena, where he and his brother Jason homesteaded land on Brown Mountain. Owen is buried on the mountain.

Developed with Pasadena Unified School District curriculum experts and Dr. William Deverell of the Huntington-USC Institute on California and the West, Owen Brown’s Body meets California educational standards at all grade levels. Drawing on extensive research, it offers fresh perspectives on John Brown’s legacy and its relevance today.

The program continues with a Q&A session featuring filmmaker Pablo D. Miralles and historian Michele Zack, who will engage with the audience and delve deeper into this fascinating history.
